Virtual Lesson by Tobias

1. Continue your characterisation of Ralph and Piggy. Begin characterising Jack - remember to focus on behaviour and not so much looks.

Jack: The oldest
Also a popular guy, The "Leader" role stands between him and Ralph, but Ralph get the Leader role.
-> Relies on his status as the leader of the choirboys to justify his authority.
-> Doesnt seem too happy about Ralph getting the leader role.

Piggy:
-> Piggy is the one who finds the Conch, and also the one who suggest to Ralph that he could use it as a tool to gather to others.
-> Piggy starts to look like Ralph right hand, since he keeps trying to help Ralph.

Ralph:
-> Ralph Gets the leader role, and he is starting to plan what the group is going to do to survive living on this island.
-> Ralph is very fast elected as a leader, since nearly all the kids yells his name under the Voting.
-> The only one who looks like a competition for Ralph in the voting for a leader is Jack.

2. Comment upon the voting (why do this?) and the role of the conch.

The Voting is used to set straight a set of rules, Ralph understands that it is important for the kids to follow these rules to make a living on the island. Also, they need a leader to give them jobs to do, so that is also something they get to vote about.

The conch found by Piggy, is used to gather the other kids, so they could talk about what they would do.

3. Compare what you have read so far to the clips from the film (YouTube). (You may want to go through the first film clip rather quickly - a lot of opening credits :-))

The books is more detailed, and they all start away from each others, while in the movie they meet at the sea and sail to the island together.
