Lord of the files - Anne, Sandy og Celine

Characterization

Piggy:
He is still talking a lot about his aunt and he is still outcast of the group. The others in the group pick on him. He wants to be accepted.

Ralph: Begins to step up to the leader role (natural leader). Show’s that he is smart, by blowing in the conch to gather people.

Jack: he is arrogant. He is the leader of the choir boys, and the only person who is able to sing a clean C note, which automatically grants him the title "leader of the choir-boys".

Comment upon the voting and the conch:
The conch starts out as a very democratic solution to having meetings, and will keep on symbolizing democracy and order throughout the film. The conch makes the outcome of the voting.

Differences:
The boys in the book starts out apart from each other, and in the film, they are together from the start. This leads to further differences (for example when Ralph and Piggy in the book finds water while on their own, while in the film it is a random boy who discovers it.).

Comparing the clips with the book:
The film clip starts with the boys arrives at the same time and in the book we first meets Ralph and then Piggy and so on. Piggy is also calling his auntie for granny. The voting is also different from the bog and the film clip. In the book, Jack suggests himself as a leader unlike in the film. Otherwise, the film follows the novel quite chronologically.

Lord Of The Flies P. 11-21 Af Steffen Og Casper Stoltze

1. Continue your characterisation of Ralph and Piggy. Begin characterising Jack - remember to focus on behaviour and not so much looks.

Ralph:
Begins to step up to the leader role (natural leader). Show’s that he is smart, by blowing in the conch to gather people. Takes more shape. Begins to take the more demanding decisions. Is more the tactical type, wants to build shelters, find food, and think of the future. (For him it’s about the thoughts you do, that makes you)
Piggy:
Becomes the sidekick. Helps Ralph in what he does, and goes round and asking people about their names. Still staying in the back, wants to be a bit neutral by not voting in the start. He’s the “cheerleader” (For him it’s about safety and team spirit, that EVERYONE is a part of the group incl. himself (Doing this for to get accept).
Jack:
Sees himself as a leader. Sees himself as very important. Are the leader of the choir/gang. Is a man/boy of action who wants to make an army and have some hunters. Are acting out childhood dreams. He’s argument for being leader is that he can sing the C sharp (For him it’s what you can do that decides how good you are).

2. Comment upon the voting (why do this?) and the role of the conch.

The voting begins, because of Jack Merridew thinks that he is the natural leader of the rabble.
The conch makes the outcome of the voting. It shows that he’s got the power (To gather the people).
Ralph is the man who brought harmony in chaos. (Ralph is now like one of the ancient gods), the mob is now worshiping him.

3. Compare what you have read so far to the clips from the film

Until now have the book and the clips have not been similar, for one: Ralph does not have fair hair.
They have a grown up already from the start and Piggy are calling he’s auntie for granny.
There are not the same symbols in the clips, that there are in the book.
The Book = Lord Of The Flies.
The Clips = Lord Of The Mosquitoes.

1. Continue your characterisation of Ralph and Piggy. Begin characterising Jack - remember to focus on behaviour and not so much looks.

Jack: The oldest
Also a popular guy, The "Leader" role stands between him and Ralph, but Ralph get the Leader role.
-> Relies on his status as the leader of the choirboys to justify his authority.
-> Doesnt seem too happy about Ralph getting the leader role.

Piggy:
-> Piggy is the one who finds the Conch, and also the one who suggest to Ralph that he could use it as a tool to gather to others.
-> Piggy starts to look like Ralph right hand, since he keeps trying to help Ralph.

Ralph:
-> Ralph Gets the leader role, and he is starting to plan what the group is going to do to survive living on this island.
-> Ralph is very fast elected as a leader, since nearly all the kids yells his name under the Voting.
-> The only one who looks like a competition for Ralph in the voting for a leader is Jack.

2. Comment upon the voting (why do this?) and the role of the conch.

The Voting is used to set straight a set of rules, Ralph understands that it is important for the kids to follow these rules to make a living on the island. Also, they need a leader to give them jobs to do, so that is also something they get to vote about.

The conch found by Piggy, is used to gather the other kids, so they could talk about what they would do.

3. Compare what you have read so far to the clips from the film (YouTube). (You may want to go through the first film clip rather quickly - a lot of opening credits :-))

The books is more detailed, and they all start away from each others, while in the movie they meet at the sea and sail to the island together.

1) 1) In this part of the text, Ralph still function as the leader of the group. He has Piggy as his ‘to do’ man. Piggy does all the work really. Collecting names, look for the others. This is while Ralph is blowing the conch. They basically have the same roles, but when the others come, Ralph is a bit threatened by Jack. Jack is also the leader type, and the leader of the choir. But at last they settle it, and Ralph is the leader, but Jack is in power as well. Jack is afraid, and nervous about losing his power, but Ralph keeps him in charge of the choir, so that he will still feel like having power.

2) They need this voting, because the kids need some kind of leader. Naturally, the kids who came because they heard the conch will see Ralph as a front figure. This is because he is the one that summoned them.

About the choir. They are loyal to Jack, as he is their leader, and he probably decided that they would go after the sound of the conch. So therefore they vote on him. Eventually Ralph wins with most of the votes, since the choir is less people. This means that Ralph has the power, and already now, especially the kids at young age, will see Ralph as the leader. He keeps Jack in charge of the choir, so he will not lose all his power. This will maybe be useful to Ralph later on. The conch plays a big role, since it is one of the reasons that Ralph wins. He has the power to call the people to him. It is like the kings scepter.

3) 2) In the first movie clip, which is the start of the film, we see the boys together already. The book starts a bit different. We don’t get to see Ralph and Piggy walking around. And we don’t get to see them finding the conch.

3) In the second clip we see piggy finding the conch, but this is after they all met. But this gets them together, where they can talk, and discuss what they are going to do. Here is also a semi election, where the most yell for Ralph to be leader. It tells the story a bit different.

Lord of the flies - Andreas, Anders, Jeppe and Martin.

Piggy: He is still restricted by his aunts teachings. He is still the outcast of the group, who is the one the others pick on. He is however eager to prove his worth and earn the group's acceptance by joining the expedition.

Ralph: He is the one who stands out from the crowd, and is elected as chief because of his still, attraktive appearance.

Jack: He is the arrogant, leader type. Leader of the choir boys, and the only person who is able to sing a clean C note, which automatically grants him the title "leader of the choir-boys". This inconsistent with the scene of the election, because he is normally the one in charge, but now he has to answer to Ralph's bidding.

Comment upon the voting and the conch:
The conch starts out as a very democratic solution to having meetings, and will keep on symbolizing democracy and order throughout the film (until it is smashed).
The children vote for their leader, because they come from a democracy, end therefore tries to keep their world together by doing as they did at home. That would have been fair enough, if they had not judged the two leaders upon their fathers’ achievements and work. They do not vote for Ralph, they vote for his father.

Differences:
The boys in the book starts out apart from each other, and in the film, they are together from the start. This leads to further differences (for example when Ralph and Piggy in the book finds water while on their own, while in the film it is a random boy who discovers it.).

Furthermore, we are introduced to more of the kids in the book that we are in the film.

Also, in the film there is an adult male survivor which is not the case in the book. The book also gives a more nuanced picture of the story. Moreover, the voting in the book is suggested by Ralph, and jack himself suggests that he should be leader, which also varies in the film.

These are major differences that influence the action in the film greatly. The film cannot be said to depict the book very accurately, and the differences, in my opinion, makes the film worse. The themes are not brought up in the same way as they are in the book.

Comparing the clips with the book:

They differ in some ways. The book starts when Ralph wakes, and not as in the movie, where all the boys reaches shore together. The great differences in the film is, that all the boys arrives at the same time, together. And therefore everyone bathes in the filmclips.

Furthermore, we also get to know some different characters in the book. Johnny and the twins are great examples of precise that!

The voting also is slight different. In the book, Jack suggests himself as the leader, unlike in the film. And Ralph does not mention that it is of no matter who becomes the leader in the novel.

Otherwise, the film follows the novel quite chronologically - it would be odd if it did not.

Blackjack

It was a Sunday in December we had just had a nice dinner and had just moved in to the living room, to get the desert. I had invited 2 of my friends over for dinner. Outside the weather were really bad, snow and a wild wind. We were sitting in the living room with a candle, which lighted up the room. It had been a good day so far.

Suddenly it knocked on the door, I thought “who is knocking on the door this late”. But I went out and opened the door. When I opened the door, the cold wind hit me in the face. But there was no one there. I locked the door and went back in the living room where my friends had picked up some cards and had started playing blackjack. I sad down and started playing.

Then it knocked on the door again. I went out to the door again and looked out from the window. No one there. I opened the door to double-check. I was just about to unlock door, but it wasn’t locked. Weird I thought, but maybe something wrong with the door. For the second time I went back to the game.

When I was just about to do my move, it knocked on the door again. I asked one of my friends, Sandy, if she would try to go out and check if it was someone who was playing a trick on us. She went out to the door and opened it and yelled to us: “No one there”. The door closed. “Sandy it is your turn!” I shouted. But I got no answer. “Sandy, come on!” I threw my cards, and stood up. Was she playing a trick on me now? I was really not in the mood for these tricks. I went out to the door, and opened it. There were some footsteps in the snow. I shouted:” Where are Sandy, come on! Tell me where you are!” I went out; the street was only lighted up by one streetlight. It was difficult to see anything. “Sandy where are you?”

I gave up; maybe she just played a trick on me. When I came back I reached the handled and tried to open the door. It was locked. I knocked on the door, and got angry. “Open Martin, it isn’t funny anymore, you and Sandy are really mean to me!” no one opened the door, so I went around the house and looked in to the window. The candle wasn’t burning anymore. Suddenly something hit the windows from inside. 2 hands kept on smashing on the windows. It was Martin. I could hear him, he shouted: “Help!”. He then disappeared. Blood from him was still on the windows. I took my shirt off, and tied it around my hand and broke the window. I jumped right in to the living room, and there was Martin lying on the floor. My white walls were all covered in blood. I picked up the knife we had used for the cake. The candle suddenly lighted up. I was scared, standing there with a knife in my hand, shaking. With small steps I went for the kitchen. It was hard to just go around Martin, but he sure was dead. In the kitchen body parts were spread all over.

I heard a noise, my heart stopped for a second, what was that!
